A Mouse in the House!

A Mouse in the House!

As some of you may know, I recently moved to Maui.  As with any new location, you live, you learn and you get to know what are the new little critters for that area.

Well never in my life have I encountered a mouse in my home!  I thought I saw something run by one evening while I was rummaging through the fridge for a late night snack.

“What was that?!” as a dark ‘thing’ ran across the kitchen floor.  OY!  It was more than a little disturbing, and needless to say, I did not fall off to sleep right away that night.

Off to the hardware store I went the next day, just to find out if this really might have been a mouse.

“Are there mice in Maui?”  From the look on her face, I could tell this might be a stupid question.  Her jaw dropped and she laughed.  “Maui is currently having an infestation!”  Uh-oh.  “There are no products available for you on the shelves, anywhere, in any store.  The County is being overrun with phone calls to come eliminate them.”  Uh-oh.  (Not only that, after further research, I found out the infestation is happening right in my neighborhood!)

“Well what are my options?”  And she proceeded to tell me about all kinds of poisons, death traps, sticky glue things that lead to slow death by starvation.  Not my intent.  “Don’t you have some kind of little trap that I can then use to let it go outside with?”  Once again, mouth agape.

“You mean you want to set him free?”  “Yes.” I said.

She proceed to tell me how every every 11 days there are 30 new babies (or something like that) and that for every one I see in the house, there are at least 20 more.

Yipes.

But I was not deterred.  Since there was nothing available for me to buy in the store anyway, I set off for home.

For the next several days, no sign of my little friend.

Then, one evening as I’m reading and writing in my armchair in the living room, out comes the little guy.  Snuck in under the gap of the back patio screen door!  Bold one too!  Just stood up and looked at me!

NO WAY!

I am not going to live with a mouse.

Then I remembered, there must be a deterrent.  I went to the Young Living Oils Testimonials site, and there were no less than 10 posts regarding deterring mice in the house.  There are some real stories there!  And over 4,000 views of some of these so clearly a mouse problem has been a challenge for others as well.

All of them pointed to only one solution: Peppermint Oil!  Apparently mice hate the smell and never come back to your pad.

Peppermint

I had no desire to kill anything.  It’s not my place to play God and take life away.  What a simple, beautiful, cure.  I dabbed several pieces of tissue and placed them strategically around the house.  I put several drops of oil along the carpet near the back porch door, around my bedroom, along the front door threshold, and dabbed the perimeter of the living room.

What a glorious scent!

And I have not seen my little buddy since. 🙂
